Dangerous Things To Do With Kids
This guy has a pretty interesting research based take on why we should do some seemingly unsafe/unsensible things with our kids. No- not to your kid. Don’t be like me and dump a glass of cold water over your kid’s head at 1am when he’s woken you up for the 2nd time in the night……………unless you’re absolutely sure it’s the right thing for you and your family.
I can only hope that everyone is getting a good chuckle from the visual.
Gever Tulley has the idea that we should let our kids throw spears in a controlled environment because our brains are hardwired for throwing things, and we have to use it or lose it like any muscle of the body.
He feels that we should let them play w/ a camp fire under supervision, and on their own terms, because then they will learn how to control fire at a young age, which is one of the things that helped us to survive as cave people.
I love that he runs a “Tinkering” camp. He helps kids to do what we wouldn’t dare let them do at home. Of course if you’re a Hirsch, things are a bit different. This year we’re not just setting off fire- works for July 4th, we’re making some of our own to set off too.
My husband is a Scientist and has researched carefully, and carefully bought some of the lesser and non- toxic powders and chemicals that go into making sparklers and some of the more controllable type fireworks. He is going to teach our 7yr. old son about the necessary safety precautions, and then teach him which chemicals mix together to get the different colors of fireworks/sparkles.
I have no idea what has become of the safer sounding idea of building a solar oven on our deck. But as Gever Tulley says: ……….they’re kids. They heal fast.
