A Few of My LEAST Favorite Things

November 13th, 2008

Short school days.  Can’t stand ‘em.  Actually they’re not quite as bad as having dental work performed on my mouth, but still, why are we not re-imbursed for the accumulated time that our kids are not spending in school?
My son is usually dismissed at 3:30.  This week and next are full of short days, though, because of parent/teacher conferences, and W. is always a short day.  On short days other than W, my son is being dismissed from school, 2 hours earlier than usual, but we’re paying the usual price.  There are 2 short days in this week, but there was no school at all on Mon. and Tues, so that’s 2 days and 4hrs. that we’re paying for that we’re not getting, and next week there are 4 of those short days, if you don’t include W. so that’s another 8 hours that we’re not getting.
Now add in Thanksgiving and Christmas vacation days.  Actually those days aren’t so bad, because they’re full days off and we can go somewhere and do something in that time, as a family.  On these shorter days, I have a couple hours less to do whatever it was I was in the middle of doing when my son came home, at which point I have to interrupt my work or play to get him a snack and find him cartoons that he likes.
Such is the usual fare of a parent, so who am I to grouse?
On the upside, I’ve found my heart’s desire in my family, and in my new life focus on my own fitness.  I’ve found people who are willing to trade lessons in dance and fitness training for massage.  I’ve also found a way to get out of deep cleaning my house.  I trade for that too.   It works well.  My cleaner loves his work, I love mine and we’re both good at what we do, so it stands to reason that we trade.
I have not yet found a way to get the morning sleep that I need, except on week-ends, when I can go back to sleep………sometimes.  Even when my son doesn’t wake me, I’m in the habit now of waking by 6am.  So we’re back to one of my least favorite things:  Sleep deprivation.  But such is the usual fare of a parent, so who am I to grouse.
Also on the up side, my son has slept in his own room this month, and I’ll feel better about leaving him earlier in the eve. as soon as we get our new dog, this week-end, because it’ll sleep in his room with him.  I finally got tired of a certain amount of privacy of which we’ve been deprived for almost a yr, now, as my son has been sleeping cross wise on our barca lounger, and miracle of miracles, my son understood, and really didn’t put up as much resistance to sleeping in his own room, as I expected.
He asked a few times to sleep in our room again, for the first week, but not since.  He’s a smart kid.  He seems to have really internalized and completely understood my reasoning about his room being more comfy for him, and how Dada and I needed our space.  He has also come to the conclusion that I actually mean what I say when I tell him that he’s not to wake us in the mornings anymore.
He was waking us because he wanted a different cartoon, but it was one that was On-Demand, so it would end and then he’d get upset, and come wake me again.  I finally drew the line, and told him that he wasn’t to leave his room in the ams, at all, until we came to get him.  So that’s where it stands now, and he’s been quite good about it, for quite a while.
This brings me to another of my least favorite things:  Leaving his room at night.  It’s one of those sweet quiet bonding moments, when we’ve had a story and some snuggle and sing, and he’s trying to get a comfy position so that he can fall asleep on my tummy.  He’s almost six, and he still likes to kiss me good-bye at the bus stop and fall asleep on my tummy at night.  Who am I to grouse?
I’ve been lucky in a lot of ways, in this life, but this takes the cake.  I’d type out more of this story, but I’m tearing up, and can’t see the screen anymore.
I wish you all many happy kiddie hugs of your own, Dear Readers.

A Few of My Favorite Things

November 3rd, 2008

One of my favorite things, right now is my new venture in starting up a “Bartering Exchange” among my fellow Petalumans.  To get in on this, email me, and check out my Yahoo group titled:  Barter_lumans. http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/Barter-lumans/message/1
If you’re not in Petaluma, please consider finding a similar group in your own City or on-line, or starting one up, yourself.  In Today’s economy, we all need more cash, and the more cash we keep in our pockets, the more we have to spend where it’s going to count- like in our own communities, on services or products produced by companies that are going to give back to the community, in some way.
Check out e-scrip.  That’s a co. that funnels some of your spendings back into the schools of your own community.  Many companies with whom you normally do business, have a policy of giving some of their profits back to the community thru e-scrip, which you can find on-line, in order to sign up and find out which companies are giving back to their communities.
Macy’s gives back, as do Safeway, and many restaurants.
Carol Gosshorn puts on some wonderful events, and participating is another of my favorite past times.  Check out www.Sonomacoeventsunlimited.com for her next few events.  Click on the one that interests you to find out more about it and you will see an option to click on that will allow you to register to participate.  She will call you when she sees your registration request.
I will be at her Bus. Networking Social on the 18th of this mo. at the Flamingo Hotel, in the Empire room (Santa Rosa- CA).  It runs from 6-9 and some very nice hors d’oeuvres, desserts, wine, and other beverages will be served.
Hope I see you there.  Bring your bus. cards, and other paraphanelia.
When you get a chance, also check out my Life Coach’s events for singles and for people wanting to work on the self improvement aspect of their lives, at any given time.  WWW.InJoyLife.com  My Coach’s name is Wendy Lyon.  She organizes wonderful retreats as well, both local and exotic.

Deals ‘N Kickbacks

October 25th, 2008

Craigslist and other readers should note that I often talk about my current specials in my blogs.  You may want to read the last 2 or 3 blogs to find out what my current deals are.
Also, I give kickbacks for referals.  Here’s how it works.  Send me one friend who tells me that they found me thru you, and you get half off your next massage, or a gift certificate for a free half hour.  You can upgrade any massage, by the half hr. for just $35.
Sending me 3 friends who mention that they came on your recommendation, gets you a whole hr. or a gift certificate for a whole hour.
Right now, my gift certificates are on sale:  Buy 2 get one free.  Each one is regularly $50, and I take pay pal, ccard #s, and checks thru the mail, as long as your Drivers Lic. # and ph. are on it.
The unusual kickbacks:  Click a link that you find on my site, and have some fun checking it out, or tell the site owner that I refered you, and that he/she should let me know that you found them thru me, and I will send you a half hr. gift certificate.  You can upgrade to a full hr. for just $35. more.
I’d also like to encourage you to read my blog about the Barter Directory that a friend and I are making.  You may want to get into this directory, if you’re a Petalu-man/woman.  Just email me your info:  Who you are; how we can reach you; what you do or have to trade; anything else you think we should know.
I’ll fwd. your info. to a friend of mine who is formatting all this info. into a booklet, to be sold for $15. or traded for.  I’ve found that there are other bartering orgs, here in Petaluma/Sonoma, but it seems that it’s expensive to join up.  This, to me, would seem to defeat the purpose.
I would really rather that we all kept our money in our own pockets as long as we can, and choose very carefully how to spend it, so that there’s a better chance that we’re spending it on locally made items/services, or somehow making certain that some part of our expenditures gets funneled back into our local school system.
Ever heard of E-Scrip?  Check it out.
E-Scrip costs you nothing.  You simply register your credit and store cards then continue to shop as you normally do, and part of your expenditures at those retail places, and grocery stores goes to our schools.  Easy and painless for us, and helpful to our schools.
You can even pick the schools or charitable orgs to which you would like some of your expenditures to go.  And (get ready for another deal) you can even get a free half hour massage from me, if you bring me a print out of your E-Scrip status.  Just balck out any part of the info. that you don’t want me to see.  I don’t need to see your credit card info. unless you’re paying me for a massage w/ your credit card.  I don’t need to see passwords, etc. so please hide your personal info.
Now share this blog w/ a friend, and bring them w/ you for back to back massages (scheduled before Dec. 31) and know that you’ll both get a great deal for the holidays.
Happy Holidays, Readers.

Who Am I? Who Could I Be?

October 23rd, 2008

http://www.shaktiquest.com/
If you click on the link above, you will see a flyer advertizing an opportunity to learn a few more techniques for becoming your ideal self.  This flyer was passed on to me by my first Belly Dance Teacher.  I tend to pay attention when she passes this type of thing on to me.  I haven’t had a chance to go to one of these events, yet, because they’re a bit far from Petaluma, but I’m quite sure that it would be fun and life enriching.
Speaking of becoming your ideal self, I already see my how my son is much like me, in a big way.  If you’re wondering if this is nurture or nature, I never taught him how to be a dreamer, and to get lost in his head, to the point where he rides the school bus to the end of the line, neglecting to get off at school.  The stubborn streak may be another story.
Luckily, my son is also like his father in many of the ways that count- literally and figuratively.  (He loves math).   I always hated math, and many other subjects as well, until I got to college.  My son on the other hand, finished his whole week of homework, last Mon. and insisted that he wanted to do more.
I was stymied.  I didn’t want him going on to the point where the lessons would become a blur in his head, but I don’t want to stifle his love of learning, either.  I also had to make sure that it was okay w/ his teacher to let him work ahead, into next weeks lessons.
My husband had a solution.  He actually earned the title of Mathmatician in school, and will look at our son’s homework, and make up or find similar lesson papers, that will be fun for our son to do, and will supplement his math workbook.
Now if only he can come up w/ a solution for my son being the dreamer that I was, when I was his age………

Week-ends

October 19th, 2008

What ever happend to the 6 day school week?!  My son is good at playing independently until the week-end, when we as his parents are obviously supposed to be his playmates.  When we tell him that Mommy and Daddy need time-out, which we do, from time to time, during the day, he looks betrayed and sulky.
Let him.

I know that I’m doing him a favor, in a tough-love kind of way.  We have plenty of bonding time during the day, pretty much any time he wants it, and he’s one of the most affectionate little guys in the world.  We have more bonding time during bath and “Snuggle and Sing” time, so I feel quite entitled to my quiet time, and he has plenty of toys, and cartoons to keep him amused, for that 10 mins. to 1h, when I’m ranting in my weblog, or checking my emails, or eating my lunch.

I’ve told other parents, often enough, that they’re entitled and even obligated to do what-ever they need to do to recharge their batteries.  It’s the only way that anyone can go back to being a good parent, as opposed to a cranky parent, using judgement colored by fatigue or resentment.  It’s also one of the best ways to keep from getting sick.

We say that we’re “sick of” doing certain things for a reason.  We say that we’re “tired to death” of doing things for a reason.  If we don’t take a break from doing those things, regularly, then we actually begin to suffer from petty ailments and muscular aches that can become costly in terms of doctors bills, and lack of ability to enjoy our family and have them enjoy us.

I’ve recently come down w/ a case of Planter Fascitis.  I didn’t do enough to take care of it when it flared up, and now I’m hobbling round on a crutch, and my son is having to do a lot more for himself, lately that I used to do for him, which is a mixed blessing.  On the other hand, it’s harder to do dishes and laundry when you’re leaning on a crutch, or trying not to put weight on a bum foot, so I am becoming a burden on my husband.

I also can’t get to my troupe’s belly dance performance, and am in a certain amount of pain.
To amuse myself, and make it easier to keep my foot elevated for longer periods of time, I’ve downloaded Skype so that my son and I can talk to AND SEE my neice and brother.

If you haven’t seen my brother Dan’s site, yet, http://www.danshaw.com I highly recommend it.  It has some really great tips on the efficacy of checking out different types of calendars.
Sometimes all you need is a change.
Sometimes all you need is a new kind of toy.  You can find an amazing one by checking out this website: http://www.jugglingworld.biz/tricks/tricks_astrojax.html  The physicist, that created this toy, Larry Shaw, is my other brother.  He has also written some really great music, and is in the process of putting out another album.

You can hear some of my brother’s music at this site: http://www.mp3.com/artist/larry-shaw/summary/
He has called himself “The King of Slow” on one of his albums, but his music is very eclectic, so don’t be fooled by that.
Well I have to get up and stretch now, because I’ve been at my computer for quite a while, Today.  Have a great week, readers, and take care of yourselves.

Oooooops and Another Soap Box

October 15th, 2008

Had to pull out of my dance performance on the 19th, this mo, but I hope that you will all still go.  I will probably be there supporting my troupe and enjoying the atmosphere, but I smashed my toe, so I can’t dance this time.  The toe was just getting better when I came down w/ Strep Throat, last night.  (The night of the 14th).  I’m using my essential oils, and some Chinese herbal tablets from my accupuncturist to get over it, instead of making a costly and nuisanceful trip to my doc for a throat culture, and even more costly anti-biotics.
This will be the 3rd or 4th time, that I’ve warded off/cured my own Strep Throat with my own oil blends, this yr.  I’ve always been quite prone to Strep Throat, so I know the signs and symptoms.  This is why I’ll be teaching a class on Essential Oils, this Spring, if all goes as planned.  I’m just waiting for approval of my class, by the woman in charge, at Petaluma Adult School.
My son is loving Kindergarten, and it’s improved his behavior, and made him eager to be more independent.  I just wish that I could get him to do his homework.
As always, we’re working hard, to make ends meet, like everyone else.  Things have gotten more difficult, of late, thanks to congress pushing thru the Wall St. Bail-Out Bill, w/ out giving us “commoners” a chance to vote on it.  They probably knew that we wouldn’t be fooled into believing that bailing out Wall St. was actually a real solution.
If they really wanted to solve the problem, they would have done something to put money back into the small communities, that they’ve been misappropriating for a long time, because when people have enough to do more than simply survive and feed their families, they feel more free to sock away their extra funds in the stock market, and IRAs and Savings accounts, and bonds.  The more we do that, the more money the govt. has to play with until they have to pay it back to us with some interest.
And it’s not only the cost of housing that’s stifling our desire and ability to sock away funds that we need to live on; it’s the hugely inflated prices of just about everything: Gas, groceries, water, electricity, schooling, school supplies, cars, car maintenance, car registration, etc.
This is why I’ve started up a Bartering directory for Petaluma.  If we are trading good and services, under the table, then there’s nothing for the govt. to tax.  What are they doing with our tax dollars?  Not putting them back into our communities.  Can you say “Schnorer”?!
A schnorer is the Yiddish term for someone who takes without ever giving back- kind of like our govt.  Lots of outsourced work in these past couple yrs. that could have gone to needy family folk here at home, and lots of money that went into fighting battles outside US borders, and the worthiness/correctness of those battles is quite debatable in each case.  The money that got put into each of those ventures wasn’t getting put into the US school system or affordable housing or elder care, here in the US.  How badly do we want more of the same old same old?
How badly do we want to take a step back toward the dark ages, when certain types of people were not given the same rights as certain other types of people?
Sarah Palin would take away a Woman’s right to choose to abort a fetus or keep the baby, no matter what the circumstances.  Putting a Republican in off. would guarantee the squealching of the rights of gay people to marry.  Even if you don’t like gay people, or have no opinion as to whether or not they should be allowed to marry, why not vote Democratic?  If you don’t like “their kind” then voting democratic would give them the freedom to flock together, there-by leaving you less at risk of being the recipient of a gay person’s pick-up line in what-ever public places you frequent for fun.
I happen to know some gay folks myself, and have found them to have great senses of humor, and I have found some of them to have been wise in counseling me when I was troubled.
But my opinion won’t sway those who have already formulated their own opinions.  I simply hope that everyone will use their heart and their common sense, when they vote.  Their common sense should prod them with the query that if rights can be taken away from one group of people then what group of people will be next in line to have some basic right taken away?  Their hearts should tell them that every one deserves the same compassion/treatment by our govt/justice system.
So that’s my political rant from a soap box for Today.  I hope that I’ve offended no one, or if I have, than I can only hope that I’ve offended everyone equally.  If you feel that you need an apology, then please consider yourself apologized to.
Now go back to a blog of mine that you enjoyed, re-read it, and mention it to me when you come in for a massage, and you’ll get a discount on that massage.
After you’ve re-read one of my other blogs, click on two of the links that I’ve mentioned in my blogs.  Hopefully there will be info. there that you haven’t seen yet, that will lead you to some fun for the week-end.  Enjoy that, and consider it my gift to you.

Please consider this to be your own personal invitation to our next performance in the Sebastapol Community Center on Morris St. on the 19th.  (North Bay Belly Dance Bazaar).  After that performance, we’ll be at Ace in the Hole on Nov. 24th.
For those of you who would like to take me up on any of those massage offers, in the first few paragraphs, you should know that my office complex at 1580 E. Washington St. shares a parking lot w/ Round Table Pizza on the E. side of Petaluma.  (Between McDowell and Maria).  The suite # is 109.  For appts: 707-762-3578
I own my own business called Suzanne\’s Hands, which is run out of the office of an accupuncturist (Edward/Nubby Shober) whose bus. is called Alternative Healthcare of Petaluma, so if you call that # to tell me that you’re going to be a bit late for your appt, he may answer the ph. saying something like:  Alternative Healthcare of Petaluma, this is Nubby.  That # is 763-9858.
Nubby can fix just about anything with his needles, and some good advice on meditation techniques, and much more besides.  I would tell you what that more is, but he gives his own auto-bio much better than I ever could.  http://www.petalumahealth.com/Shober.htm#TOP
I expect that I’ll be featured on his site again, as soon as it\’s completely reconstructed.
Keep watching for my deals and events.  Also, check out some of my links, for current events/fun stuff.
Stay well, readers.  Remember it’s Winter now.  Time to be really conscientious about taking care of yourself.

A Cool Event/Inspiration and Motivation

October 4th, 2008

We are excited to offer an interactive evening event on Friday, October 10, 2008 from 7-10pm in San Rafael.  Please join us for this ACES (Awakening, Connecting, Energizing, Service) program designed to motivate us into action.  We’ll watch a short inspirational video of Van Jones, an amazing leader in the world of social justice/ environmental action/and spiritual fulfillment.  This will be an evening with opportunities for deepening connection, identifying one’s gifts and moving into action in a spirit of camaraderie and fun.

Our events have been praised for their intimate and welcoming atmosphere.  In a word – a sense of community and connection.  The Awaken the Dreamer Symposium September 27th was inspiring, and offered a new paradigm for hope in these difficult times.  We are committed to empowering you into action with clear opportunities, projects and engaged others. You will learn about Be the Change circles and can get involved in a circle that inspires you.

Refreshments will be provided and there will be free time for schmoozing, snacking and dancing.

Donation is $20-$25 and goes to ACES (Awakening, Connecting, Energizing, Service).  Please let us know if you can join us, and if you need directions.  There will be a shuttle from the parking area to the event (To RSVP, call Wendy at 415-342-1300 or email DrWendy@InJoyLife.com).    We’d love to see you there!  Everyone is welcome so please invite those who may be interested.  Thank you!

In deep partnership and gratitude,

Lynne Michelson and Wendy Lyon

As you can see, this event is being put on by a doctor.  I happen to know her quite well, as she is my Life Coach, and I’ve found her help to be invaluable.  Seeing her regularly is a wonderful gift that I’ve promised to myself, because it helps me to use her as a sounding board, when I’m planning changes in my life, and when I’m trying to get a routine down pat.  And sometimes it just feels good to have someone to brag to when I’ve gotten a good routine down pat.
She is helping me to prepare a class that I am planning to teach in the Spring.  I hope that my readers will consider coming to learn about how essential oils can change anyone’s life for the better, in (m)any way(s).  They can clear airways and clean the air, aid in digestion and lift moods.  They can also prevent ailments from taking hold in the body, and ease every day aches and pains.
That’s just a taste of what you’ll learn in my class.  You’ll also learn how to blen your own to suit your own desires/needs, and you will take home what you’ve blended.
If you haven’t checked out my Life Coaches site, yet, for her other events, I highly recommend it.  Scroll back up and avail yourself of some fun and educational experiences by going to her events.  Remember to tell her that you found her thru me.

For My Fellow Celiacs and Other “Health Nuts”.

October 2nd, 2008
My Friend, Jen Isacol has allowed me to put the following info. out to others who may be interested in getting some support and learning more about new products for thos of us who are eating Gluten Free because it makes us feel healthier, for whatever reason.
North Bay Celiacs
Upcoming celiac support group meetings:
Napa County: October 18, 10am Napa/ Queen of the Valley Medical Center
Sonoma County: November 2, 3pm Rohnert Park/ private home
Marin County: December 10, 6:30pm San Rafael/ Elephant Pharmacy
For more information about these meetings, celiac disease, and the gluten-free diet, please contact your local group leader through our web site:
http://www.northbayceliacs.org/ I’m looking forward to opening a new chapter of my life, (as I do daily) as I get started on a new routine of less clutter of my daily calendar, and my home.  I’m going to start doing more toward my own physical fitness, and cutting down on “extra curricular” activities that take me away from my family, several evenings a month.  I’m excited about teaching a class, this Spring, at the Petaluma Adult School, and about hooking up with more people who would rather do more work in trade for other services than for cash, which can be taxed, and migrated out of our own small community too easily and too easily into the pockets of big businesses, which fund the political campaigns of their own favorite politicians, who then do political favors, for those big businesses in return, which takes their attention from doing things to actually help bring down the cost of simply surviving, here in America.
I really hope that my readers will take this to heart and join me in an effort to keep our money within our own community by buying local, or trading/bartering whenever you can, and then when it comes time, I hope that you will all vote as thoughtfully as you can, and for the politicians that you believe to be the least corrupt, or for the ones that you truely believe have the best interests of ALL Americans at heart and not just the owners of big businesses.
I feel so strongly about this, that I am actually now considering beginning a sort of barter/trade co-op in Petaluma.  I’ve seen a Bartering group here in Petaluma, but it is costly to join, and to me that would seem to defeat the purpose of joining.
Pls. contact me if you would be interested in having your name put into a directory of people looking to trade services or products, here in Petaluma.
Take Care All.
Sue.

Belly Fun

September 30th, 2008

So you know about one way in which I do something healthy for my belly.  I Belly Dance.  You know that I’ll be performing on the 19th at Noon in the Sebastapol Community Center.
I’ve also mentioned that I have Celiac Disease, which is slowly but surely becoming a more commonly known challenge, of late.  More and more, doctors are coming to realize that many plus many neurological difficulties, are related to a glutenous diet, and that the symptoms can usually be alleviated to some extent, and often to  a very great extent by sticking to a gluten free diet plan.
This type of diet is quickly becoming less awkward, and more tastey, as more and more food product companies and individuals with some need or desire for improved health experiment in their kitchens.
Jen Isacol is a great contact to have if you want to find a Celiac Support group in Sonoma/Marin/Napa.  Pls. email me, for her contact information, and she has just sent word about the next few support group meetings, in ea. of these regions, so if you want or need to know, just ask.  My email again, is:  Makodiak@juno.com
I can also tell you that ToastMaters is a great place to be to acheive even more balance in your life, by adding in some mental stimulation along w/ your exercise routine.  I am unfortunately having to drop out of ToastMasters for a short while, in order to re-organize my life, a little bit.  I’m realizing that I want to be spending more time with my hubby, on some of his interests, and it is now his turn to find an exercise class, at least one eve. a week, and my turn to stay home and watch our son, while he gets out and gets some exercise.  He did this for me, for a long while, and will continue to do so, but I need to also make room for his health needs.
Maybe once in a while, we’ll get lucky, and one of our friends will take our son, for a while, while we dance together.
The couple that plays together, stays together.
There’s a lot more to that staying together thing, than just playing together, of course, but playing together helps a lot.  Remember, you need time for you alone, time for you and the spouse alone, and time for you and ea. kid alone, and time for the two of you and the kids all together.  Every one needs their own space at least for an hr. or so, ea. day.  Teach your kids to play alone at times, and teach them that when you say “Mommy/Daddy needs a time out.”  that that’s not their fault, but that when they give you your space at that time that they’re helping you, and that you really need that break so that you can come back to them w/ sweetness and patience.
Also remember to tell them at least once a day that you love them, and that you’re proud of them.  These two things are seperate, different and equal in importance.
Think about it.
